NHL Draft 2013: Blackhawks trade Michael Frolik to Jets for 2 picks

The Blackhawks continued to move pieces of their Cup-winning team in pursuit of cap space by dealing Michael Frolik.

Michael Frolik is heading to the Winnipeg Jets after the Chicago Blackhawks traded him for the 74th and 134th picks in the 2013 NHL Draft.

Chicago acquired Frolik in a 2011 trade with Florida. He scored 21 goals in each of his first two seasons in the NHL, but the Blackhawks have mainly used the 25-year-old as a penalty killer. He was a central part of the team's third-ranked penalty kill, giving him more value than his 10 points would indicate. Frolik did shine in the playoffs, totaling 10 points in 23 games.

The Blackhawks have been trying to cut salary since winning the Stanley Cup last week, even if it means dealing pieces of their championship team. They traded Dave Bolland earlier in the day and now Frolik, leaving them $11,212,372 under the salary cap, according to CapGeek.com

Frolik has one year and $1.9 million left on his contract.

Bryan Bickell agrees to contract extension with Blackhawks

The Chicago Blackhawks and pending-unrestricted free agent Bryan Bickell have come to terms on a four-year, $16 million contract extension.

The Chicago Blackhawks have come to terms on a contract extension with forward Bryan Bickell, according to multiple reports on Sunday night.

The two sides have reportedly agreed to a four-year, $16 million contract that will carry an annual average value of $4 million against the salary cap. Bickell played out the final-year of a three-year, $1.6 million deal that carried an annual average value of $541,667 in 2013 and was expected to receive a substantial raise this summer, whether from the Blackhawks or a suitor on the free agent market come July 5.

Prior to the agreement, manager Stan Bowman traded forwards Dave Bolland and Michal Frolik in separate deals during the 2013 NHL Draft. In return for the players, the Blackhawks received picks. The goal of these deals was to seemingly free up salary cap space to sign Bickell to an extension.

In 48 games in 2013, Bickell registered 23 points (nine goals and 14 assists) and averaged 12:48 of ice time in the regular season. In the team's run to the Stanley Cup, Bickell recorded the second most points on the team with 17 (nine goals, eight assists) and averaged 15:22 of ice time in 23 games.

Stanley Cup Final TV ratings: Game 6 draws third-highest NBC rating ever

LinkFacebookTwitter

While not quite capable of reaching the numbers of some of the most-watched games in league history, the terrific Game 6 between the Blackhawks and Bruins still ranks pretty high in terms of NHL broadcasts throughout history.

The Blackhawks stunning Game 6 comeback drew 8.16 million viewers to NBC on Monday night, making it the ninth-most watched U.S. broadcast of an NHL game in league history. Since 1995, when the league brought the Stanley Cup Final back to broadcast television, it is the third-most watched game of an era when rights have been shared by NBC, ABC and Fox. It is the third-most watched game since the sport came back to NBC in 2006.

The only games in the last 39 years with more viewers than Monday's Game 6 were Game 7 of Bruins vs. Canucks in 2011 (8.54 million viewers) and the overtime Game 6 between the Blackhawks and Flyers in 2010 (8.28 million). These numbers came despite many in Chicago being without power on Monday, and the game being moved to a separate affiliate in big market Detroit.

What does it mean? Well, in the grand scheme, not much. We all knew that a Blackhawks-Bruins Stanley Cup Final would be big business for the sport. They brought records to NBCSN, and great audiences to NBC. It caps off a year in which hockey fans were denied their sport for three months, and then devoured it insatiably once it returned, which record regular season, playoff and likely, Stanley Cup Final ratings.

Most-watched NHL games of all-time in the U.S.

1. 5/18/71, Montreal vs. Chicago, Game 7: 12.41 million (CBS)
2. 5/11/72, Boston vs. NY Rangers, Game 6: 10.93 million (CBS)
3. 5/10/73, Montreal vs. Chicago, Game 6: 9.41 million (NBC)
4. 6/15/11, Boston vs. Vancouver, Game 7: 8.54 million (NBC)
5. 4/30/72, NY Rangers vs. Boston, Game 1: 8.51 million (CBS)
6. 5/12/74, Boston vs. Philadelphia, Game 3: 8.30 million (NBC)
7. 6/9/10, Chicago vs. Philadelphia, Game 6: 8.28 million (NBC)
8. 5/7/72, Boston vs. NY Rangers, Game 4: 8.26 million (CBS)
9. 6/24/13, Chicago vs. Boston, Game 6: 8.16 million (NBC)
10. 6/12/09, Pittsburgh vs. Detroit, Game 7: 7.99 million (NBC)

NHL Draft 2013: Nathan MacKinnon goes first overall

The San Jose Sharks acquired the No. 18 overall selection in the 2013 NHL Draft via trade with the Detroit Red Wings. In exchange for the pick, the Red Wings received the No. 20 and 58 overall selections in the draft.

San Jose used the pick to select Mirco Mueller of the Everett Silvertips of the Western Hockey League. The 18-year-old native of Switzerland was chosen with the No. 11 overall selection in the Canadian Hockey League import draft. In 63 games with the Silvertips in 2012-2013, Mueller registered six goals, 25 assists and 31 points.

You can use one adjective to describe Mueller- steady. He's often compared to his former defense partner- Columbus prospect Ryan Murray, last year's second-overall pick. Prior to Murray suffering a season-ending injury, the duo were relied upon by the Silvertips to shut down the opposition's top players, kicking in occasional offense as well. After the injury to Murray, Mueller went on to have a solid season in Everett, who are in the midst of a rebuild.

He reminds me of former Jacket John Moore- steady, smart, but not flashy. He would do well paired with a more offensive-minded defense partner, providing cover in offensive situations. He'd be equally adept in a pure shutdown role as well. The team that drafts him will get a very safe, versatile defenseman.

Yahoo junior hockey blog Buzzing the Net has an interview with Mueller here.
